The image of empress Catherine II in educational books of the second half of 18th century
Abstract
The article is devoted to the illustrated educational books of the second half of 18th century. It draws attention to the figure of Catherine the Great who did a lot to make the education available for the Russian children. The Russian book graphics of this period is one of the prominent and significant phenomena of national artistic culture. Despite this no serious research on the book illustrations has been written yet. The graphic heritage of G. Panin, I. Nabgolts, I. Tupilev, G. Srebrenitsky is rather considerable and each master is very original. The peculiarities of the illustrations, an emotional expressive manner of engravers are described in the paper. Specific problem this article is dealing with is to trace the elements of Baroque, Rococo, Classicism in the illustrations. The most appealing trends in the illustrated educational books of the period seem to be the Rococo ones. That’s why book graphics is now becoming of great interest.
