On the authorship of the icon “Nicola Lipniy” (13th century)
Abstract
The article analyzes the inscription on one of the most respected Novgorod icons of St. Nicolas in the church of Nicolas on Lipna. Alexa Petrov was considered as the author of the icon “Nicola Lipny” (1294). The copies of the inscription, made in the 17th century, and unknown before, are becoming in the spotlight of scientific attention. Based on all the documents, a conclusion is made that the icon painter’s name was Mitka Petrov, and it suggests that he may not be the author, but rather the restorer of the above mentioned icon who worked in the 17th century.
