On reconstruction of the biography and attribution of works by G.-J. Tsebegiin: a master of Saint-Petersburg Buddhist temple
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the biography and works of Geleg-Jamtso Tsebegiin ,one of the masters of St. Petersburg Buddhist temple, a Buryat artist, a philosopher. He is known as a man of great knowledge, an ordained lama, an author of some works on Buddhist astronomy and mathematics. The article emphasizes the role of G.-J. Tsebegiin in creating the temple decoration of the datsan in St. Petersburg. He was a connoisseur of the religious-philosophical system Kalachakra, the symbols of which play a significant role in the decoration of the temple. He largely contributed to the construction and decoration of the main altar of the datsan. It also analyses G.-J. Tsebegiin’s manuscript “Maudgalyaana in hell” of the first half of XX century from the collection of the State Museum of the History of Religion, its system of composition, colour and style of painting.
