Stylistic polyphony in Russian art of the second half of XVIII and the beginning of XIX century. On the example of book graphics
Abstract
The article focuses on evolution of book graphics, which can be considered as one of the most important problems of modern Art Studies. This article concerns peculiarities of the style forms of book illustrations in the second half of XVIII and the beginning of XIX century. This period saw a flourishing of the typography culture. The article gives an account of cross-cultural conception of XVIII century. In addition, it describes vignettes, allegoric illustrations of Russian editions of the second half of XVIII century which support the idea of monarchy domination. Furthermore, it interprets emblematic compositions, attributes, Masonic symbols. The article gives a detailed account of rococo style in terms of book graphics of the period. It finds out pre-romantic trends in the book illustrations of the second half of XVIII and the beginning of XIX century. It also discovers a tendency towards sentimentalism of XIX century in Voltaire’s portrait in the edition of 1785. The described illustrations give evidence of persistent development and fruitful life of baroque and rococo traditions, enable us to appreciate the results and predict the tendency of Russian art development.
