Unknown Lars Sonck — Unfulfilled Projects
Abstract
The article deals with two unfulfilled projects of Lars Sonck (1870–1956) — one of the most prominent Finnish architects of the period known as “national romanticism”, namely: the Museum of archeology, history, and ethnography in Helsinki and the Parliament House. The article continues a series dedicated to different spheres of expertise of L. Sonck — one of the founders of Finnish school of architecture. These projects vividly demonstrate how the artistic method of the architect changed in the early XXth century. The author of the article describes the background history of the competitions at which the projects were presented, their peculiar features as well as those typical of the period, goes into details of the engineering solutions, speaks about the manner of exterior and interior decoration. Such in-depth analysis allows to fully understand the process of style formation in Finnish architecture of the first decade of the XXth century, which was a period of transition from Art Nouveau to Neoclassical style in Finnish architecture.
