Evolutionism and diffusionism. Development of ideas about the evolution of the traditional architecture in russian science
Abstract
This paper considers the evolution of opinions of Russian scientists on the evolution of traditional buildings since the mid-nineteenth century to the present time in the context of the fight and influence of two fundamental scientific concepts — evolutionism and diffusionism. It discusses the history of appearance and development of these concepts in Russia, their struggle and mutual influence, dependent on the political situation and general condition of science. Also, on the background of war views and concepts it shows the role of the most famous scientists contributed to the study of the traditional architecture of Russia. The prospects and potential of scientific approaches in modern conditions, their possible evolution and the trend towards rapprochement of the methods is mentioned, with some conclusions.
