S. V. Smolensky — music missionary
Abstract
The article discusses the little-known side of S. V. Smolensky’s activities, which are connected with educational practices of the Orthodox singing traditions in the Middle Volga region in the second half of the 19th century. The article focuses on his work concerning musical adaptations of the liturgical Slav-Orthodox hymns for the new ethnic groups into Turk and Finno-Ugric languages of native peoples in each part of the region.
