On restoration of figured double weaving technique (ancient forms of Russian patterned weaving technique)
Abstract
The paper considers a figured double weaving technique (an ancient form of patterned weaving technique), which had previously existed in Russia, but became lost in the early 20th century. In order to restore this kind of weaving technique the authors have conducted a technical analysis of the structure of woven ornamented double fabric using museum samples and have developed a process for producing these fabrics on a hand loom. This article describes the results of this work which has been conducted at the Faculty of Arts, within the program “Applied arts”. This is the first time that the Russian patterned double fabrics have been recreated and presented.
