Arabesque and grotesque in Russian classicism of the second half of XVIII century. On volume and space design of light devices of the time of Catherine the Great
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of palace chandeliers during the time of Catherine the Second and Paul the First. The structure of Russian chandeliers of classicism, which featured ancient motives, has not gained so far academic consideration. They were studied in terms of their conforming to the classical style of interior. We concluded that chandeliers influenced the traditional Russian forms of church chandeliers, as well as development of French decorators, who are constantly studying Russian masters. The main aim of the research is to prove that the three-dimensional solution of lights of the time of Catherine the
Great was based on antique grotesque. The chandeliers featured the latest achievements of Russian glass industry, with stained glass being used for manufacturing of lamps in Russian. All these factors led to the emergence of magnificent chandeliers of the original design. At first the construction was developed by master craftsmen, who managed to find a completely new solution to the forms of decorative art, and later well-known architects developed the design of chandeliers.
