The role linings-analogies in the creative method of Lev Dodin
Abstract
The methodology of “alive theatre”, beginning from K. S. Stanislavsky, needs its constant renovation and development. The practices of Lev Dodin can be regarded as a successful example of such renovation and development. One of the principle discoveries of Lev Dodin is his rehearsal method of role linings-analogies. This method can be considered as a contemporary methodological incarnation of one of the main principles of K. S. Stanislavsky’s system — the principle “I am under the present circumstances”. The article is devoted to this method. The article is based on the books, published in the recent time by Lev Dodin, as well as on the recordings of rehearsals by Lev Dodin, which since 1997 the author of the article has regularly been visiting at the Saint-Petersburg State Academic Maly Drama Theatre — Theatre of Europe.
