On history of restoration of Russian artistic furniture
Abstract
The article studies the history of restoration of Russian artistic furniture in the first half of the XIXth century. It is based on the archive documents. The analysis of these documents states the volume and types of works made in case of the furniture bore any signs of wearing or as a result of changes in taste, fashion and stylistic trends of the time. The pieces of furniture which were constantly used were often restored. The restoration of the furniture mainly concerns the replacement of upholsteries, renovation and sometimes changes of the finishing layer, some of these changes being described in this article. It sheds light on a lot of archive documents which have not been published before; at present they are the only source of information on history of this subject. Moreover, it presents some information about the materials used in both initial production of the furniture and in its subsequent alterations. Nowadays the lack of the information about a monument from the diachronic perspective is an essential problem in carrying out the scientific restoration of the monuments.
