Abstract

Development of St. Petersburg lead to heavier urbanization load on the Neva River in the area of the city historic center, and stimulates transformation of the coastal zone in the delta of the Neva River and its surrounding areas. This process increases an interest in the ways of organizing urban development at the
junction with waters. The article criticizes the proposal to build the tunnel along the Palace Embankment, which may cause damage to protected landscapes. It is noted that the problems arising in these areas reflect general problems of the city and cannot be overcome by local means. The article provides an overview of typical urban planning solutions on the banks of the rivers of European cities, and proposes principles of their typological differentiation. It also provides photographs of characteristic landscapes, accompanied by brief explanations. In particular, the article emphasizes the experience of forming two-level embankments of the Seine in Paris, which allows to separate traffic and pedestrian flows, and to form recreational areas on the bank of the river. The article concludes with a proposal to use this approach in St. Petersburg urban planning.
