I. E. Repin’s graphic works for the illustrated edition of “People’s bible” by A. V. Prakhov and S. I. Mamontov
Abstract
The article examines the illustrations for the Old and New Testaments created by I. E. Repin during the period from 1867 to 1878. To date, the subject has attracted little attention of scholars, whose interest was primarily concentrated on the analysis of the master’s historical oeuvre and portraiture. Based on a comprehensive study of newly acquired works of Ilya Repin, archival and published materials, the article described in detail the history of creating a series of illustrations for the People’s Bible and Repin’s Chuguyiv holidays in the implementation of the project. The materials considered in the study revealed the most important periods of the artist, in which he turned to the biblical stories, and the influence of Ukrainian Baroque elements in his early works on this subject. This research aims to reveal the influence of the Ukrainian Baroque on the artist’s graphic works, created for the so-called People’s Bible in the context of I. E. Repin’s artistic’s development. The research offers a new outlook at the artist’s early works which are directly interlinked with the tradition and training techniques of icon painting in the Imperial Academy of Art as well as in art guilds in the South of the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th.
