Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the history of Classic Maya vase painting. More than a hundred years has passed since the first publications that presented the works of the ancient Maya painted pottery. During this time a long way was made from cautious guesses to confident image interpretation and reading hieroglyphic inscriptions that accompany them. Breakthrough in the study of the Maya vase painting occurred in the 70s 20th century has been associated with the success of deciphering Mayan writing, the accumulation of “critical mass” of artifacts and works of Michael Ko. Currently, due to publications on the Internet of rollout photographs of images presented on the vessels, the study of the Maya vase painting is one of the most rapidly developing areas of Mayan studies. The present paper marks the most important milestones in the history of Mayan art ceramics research, provides links to relevant sources. The article gives a brief overview of Russian works which have been dedicated to the study of the ancient Maya art in general, and vase painting in particular.
