“The King is dead. Long live the King!”: эволюция и функционирование мифа о Джордже Вашингтоне в изобразительном искусстве США XIX века
Аннотация
Миф о Джордже Вашингтоне как идентифицирующем герое Америки не только не прекратил свое существование со смертью «отца нации» на рубеже XVIII–XIX вв., но и получил новый мощный импульс к развитию — в том числе в живописи. Рассматриваемые в настоящей статье произведения изобразительного искусства зафиксировали переход от изображения Вашингтона как реальной фигуры к художественному воспроизведению чистой мифологемы «отца нации», включившей в себя символическое воскрешение, обожествление и уподобление персоналиям античной и библейской истории. Сакральность Вашингтона, избыточность которой многими осознавалась, тем не менее сохранит свои позиции в общественном сознании на протяжении всего XIX столетия и будет настолько устойчивой, что даже попытки противодействия ей через возвращение Вашингтону черт обычного человека примут форму мифа — единственного «языка», которым Америка могла говорить о своем символе.
