The fresco “The appearance of Godmother to St. Peter in the refraction of the sacred bread” and a problem of Sofian iconography in Old Russian monumental painting of the second half of 17th — first half of 18th century
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the analysis of one of the fundamental compositions of central apse of the Upper Volga region’s temples of the second half of 17th — first half of 18th century, namely the apocryphal story “The appearance of Godmother to St. Peter in the refraction of the sacred bread”. Only the icons on this theme, that date back to the second half of 16th — the beginning of 17th century, have so far gained academic consideration among the scholars. This study aims to reveal the new meanings, which are implied by the picture of “The Refraction” regarded as a part of the altar. This approach can lead to adopting a fresh view on the subject of this picture. The analysis resulted in understanding the meaning of placing the fundamental compositions within the central apse and the theme of St. Sofia’s ideas in the Russian iconographical theologies of the period in question.
