On some elements of symbolism in Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings
Abstract
The article touches upon a complicated and interesting problem of symbolism and allegorical imagery in the paintings of a great Dutch master of the XVI century — H. Bosch. The article suggests a possible interpretation of one of the symbols — a toad, depicted several times on the inner panels of the altar triptychs The Garden of the Earthly Delights and The Temptation of St. Antony. The interpretation is based on the data contained in the investigatory papers on the Inquisition which may be found in a book by J.-A. Llorente, Histoire critique de L’Inquisition d’Espagne, Paris, 1817.
