Jesuit theatre in France in the XVIIth century (performances of the 1650s)
Abstract
The article analyzes little-known subjects of French theatre art in the middle of XVIIth century, in the beginning of Louis XIV reign — the Jesuit stage performances. The unique historical documentation from the famous Clermont college in Paris makes it possible to restore images of several important performances, such as biblical tragedy “Saul” (1651) by an unknown Jesuit dramatist and hagiographical play “The Christian Susanna” by Adrien Jourdan (1653), which young Louis XIV and his court had honour to see. The author examines the specific form of a stage in this Jesuit college, its scenery, mise-en scenes, performance techniques and public perception. The article considers the questions of the Jesuit theatre aesthetics, drama and stage traditions, interaction with the professional theatre arts.
