Robert Fludd’s metaphysics of music and number
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine some aspects of philosophical doctrines by Robert Fludd (1574– 1637), an English philosopher, a physician, an M.D., and a music theoretician, on the basis of his treatise “Utriusque Cosmi historia…”. The authors bring to the fore Fludd’s concept of Musical Number and his views on musica mundana, one of three types of musica speculative, which is understood as inaudible music of the spheres arranged by coordinated movements of the Universe. The special attention is paid to Fludd’s philosophy of Number and Musical Number, his interpretation of Pythagoras’ doctrines, as well as Fludd’s own concepts of Musica Mundana such as hylomorphism of formal and material pyramids, mundane monochord, etc.
