Abstract

The article continues the series of publications of the author on the topic of public art. It looks at some of the trends of artistic life of 1970–2000s, the key events of which are international exhibitions. The author relates the growth of the relevance of such events with the phenomenal spread of conceptualism ideas among artists, critics and curators. As two striking examples of implementation of the “conceptualist idiom” into practice the author analyzes Sculpture Project in Münster and Fourth plinth project in London. Also the article considered the problems of contemporary art exhibiting in the traditional urban environment, problems of interaction of the artist with the public, the impact of social context on the aesthetic value of the artwork. Personal opinion expressed in the article implies a continuation of the discussion on the topic.
