Character and mask in the photography of the 19th century
Abstract
The article is devoted to the phenomena of mask and character in the photography of the 19th century. The idea of character and mask was connected with presentation of the invisible. This interest to the unseen can be recognized as an attempt to find the secrets of life. Recognizing man’s spirit as a reflection of human nature, photography regarded character as a manifestation of the truth. In the same time character was one of the human masks, the way to distribute the personal and social identity. In the photography of 19th century the face and character can be identified as a mask, but the ultimate goal was a presentation of the sense of existence, the construction of the first rate reality.
