Photography and phenomenon of tragic: the idea of duty and the figure of responsibility
Abstract
In the culture of the early modern period the images of tragedy acquired a special status: it became a sign of belonging to art. Concerning the photography, the theme of suffering and negativity is part of the story. In the theory and practice of arts this topic means two main aspects — it is about the expression of suffering and the problem of its consumption. In the european culture attitude to the tragic changed over the time. The gradual set of principles concerning the demonstration and the perception of suffering has been formulated by various authors from Aristotle, Cicero and Augustine of Hippo to Lessing, Sontag and Derrida. The particularity of photography in connection to the topic of trauma is associated with the reliability of the image. The idea of truth identified new position of the showing of tragedy, which are more or less connected with the classic scheme. The article examines the phenomena of the tragic — especially in relation to the area of photography.
